Konzeption und Organisation: AFRIEUROTEXT und fresh Magazine in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Weltmuseum Wien
Diese zweite Ausgabe des KITONG-KIASS INTERNATIONALEN 3RRR-SYMPOSIUMS 2023 widmet sich der Bedeutung von Restitution für den afrikanischen Kontinent sowie für die afrikani-sche Diaspora am Beispiel der Benin-Bronzen.
Als Ehrengast wird Phil Otaniyen Omodamwen, ein Benin-Bronzegießer der 6. Generation aus Benin City/Nigeria, anreisen. Er wurde in die Omodamwen-Familie geboren, die seit 1504 n. Chr. zur Benin-Bronzegilde angehört und stolz auf die über 500-jährige Tradition des Bronzegus-ses zurückblickt.
Zahlreiche weitere Redner*innen und Akteur*innen aus der afrikanischen Diaspora in Öster-reich sowie aus der österreichischen und internationalen Zivilgesellschaft werden dieses hochka-rätige Symposium prägen.
Ziel ist es, einen inklusiven und differenzierten Dialog zwischen den österreichischen Bun-desmuseen, staatlichen Institutionen und der afrikanischen Diaspora in Österreich zu fördern und zu stärken, auf eine nachhaltige und inklusive Zusammenarbeit mit afrikanischer Diaspora in Ös-terreich hinzuarbeiten, die Komplexität der Restitutionsfrage anzugehen sowie Gegenwart und Zukunft gemeinsam zu gestalten.
„KITONG-KIASS“ ist ein Ausdruck aus der Yangben-Sprache, einer Variante der Yambassa-Sprachgruppe in Kamerun. Kitong bedeutet Erbe oder Erinnerung, während Kiass „unser“ heißt. Die Übersetzung für „KITONG-KIASS“ lautet daher „unser Erbe, unsere Erinnerung“. Es geht um Teilen, Heilen, Inklusion, eine neue Ethik der Erinnerung.

RESTITUTION, REHABILITATION and RECONCILIATION
The Significance of Restitution in Africa and for the Diaspora using the example of the Benin Bronzes
15th, 16th, and 17th of November 2023 in Vienna/Austria (respectively from 10 am to 21 pm)
This second edition of the KITONG-KIASS INTERNATIONAL 3RRR SYMPOSIUM 2023 is dedicated to the importance of restitution for the African continent as well as for the African Diaspora, using the Benin Bronzes as an example.
Phil Otaniyen Omodamwen, a 6th generation Benin bronze caster from Benin City, Nigeria, will be the guest of honour. He was born in Benin City into the Omodamwen´s family which belongs to the Benin bronze guild since 1504 AD and proudly keeps alive over 500 years heritage of bronze casting.
Numerous other speakers and players from the African Diaspora in Austria, as well as from the Austrian and international civil society, will shape this high-profile event.
The aim is to foster and strengthen the necessity of an inclusive and differentiated dialogue be-tween Austrian Federal Museums, governmental institutions, and the African Diaspora in Aus-tria, to work towards a sustainable and inclusive collaboration with African Diasporas in Austria, to tackle the complexity of the Restitution Issue and shape the present and the future together.
‘KITONG-KIASS’ is an expression from the Yangben language, which is a variant of the Yam-bassa language group in Cameroon. Kitong means heritage or memory, while Kiass means our. Therefore, ‘KITONG-KIASS’ translates to ‘Our heritage, our memory’. It is about sharing, heal-ing, including, a new ethic of memory.
